It was just over one year ago that Millard Fuller, the founder of Habitat for Humanity, passed away suddenly near Americus Georgia on Wednesday February 3rd, 2009. Millard was a man of passion and determination beyond description. He was a self-made millionaire at a very young age who saw his relationship with his wife deteriorate. As part of their reconciliation, Millard and his wife Linda divested themselves of their great wealth to begin a life of service. Millard and Linda Fuller founded Habitat for Humanity in an abandoned barn on Koinonia Farms. From those humble beginnings Millard took an idea, and created a movement that would be dedicated to provide hope to the impoverished around the world through building simple, decent and affordable housing. The model was simple but the goal was enormous; to eliminate poverty housing from the face of the planet. In 1976 Habitat for Humanity was established and 34 years later over 350,000 homes have been dedicated supporting over 1.75 million people around the globe.
Millard Fuller founded the work of Habitat on the “Theology of the Hammer” which emphasized putting faith and love into action. This theology also presented the realization that sufficient resources exist in the world today for solving the problem of poverty housing and the only missing piece is the willingness to pick up a hammer to help.
"I see life as both a gift and a responsibility. My responsibility is to use what God has given me to help his people in need."— Millard Fuller
